Let’s Keep talking about 3D Viewers

To continue the discussion about 3d viewers; there seems to be plenty of blogs discussing 3D viewers. Which is good, since we’re going through and reviewing the latest viewers right now. This might be a little interesting for you.

  • 3D Viewing For Everyone… Remember “The Floating Finger” trick as a kid? Point each index finger on the other and holding 6 inches directly in front of each eye, look off into the distance and you can see a floating finger. It’s the same trick with stereo image pairs, but if you have trouble cross your eyes and adjust the distance from the screen, and bam! your seeing in 3d. I really liked this site, I spent sometime playing with this. I have had to do this with aerial photography, but how fun is it to photograph in stereo? Click on the below image to see one of the better stereo pairs. So, who is going to do this with an animation?
  • Flash Den is charging 40 bucks for what appears to be basic papervision3d and some canned content. I am sure this is a great tool and could save someone a few hours. But if you really want 3d right now and you can’t code using papervision and you don’t need to use flash, then look into either Quicktime VR or better yet use Viewpoint Media Player. Viewpoint is a favorite, and the good news they recently were bought up and you can either buy enliven pro or download some of the old free publishing tools. If both of these are too challenging, don’t feel bad. Go to the above website and order a stereo camera.
  • Flash Enabled Blog provides a 3d tutorial how to create a flex 3d viewer… in Away3d or Papervision3d. Actually not a bad site. Actually, quite a few blogs and tutorials dealing with flash 3D so I won’t list them all here since they are talking about the samething.
  • One other flash based viewer I will mention and everyone is keeping an eye on http://blog.alternativaplatform.com/
  • and then Java 3D and hey… 3dpowersparks is coming up on the list.. cool, along with blogs that really go off the trail as far as I can tell.

Okay… so that’s about the only thing worth typing about… Try Google Blog Search and see what you come up with. So if your interested in flash 3d content.. then check on the links on my Blog Roll and see ya. Or…

From my experience, if you want a quick and simple way to post pretty good 3d content and don’t want to spend a lot of time, use viewpoint. If you need help with loading the content or creating the content contact me. (You’ll need to remove the spaces in my email: harley @ 3dpowersparks . com)

Whats coming next? couple of book reviews…how about some discussion of social networks and geospatial extensions? umm…

regards,

Harley

In Visual Form: Adobe User Group Website!

I couldn’t wait for the hosting IP to finish setting up, but I am announcing the establishment of an Adobe Honolulu User Group. http://www.invisualform.org
As soon as possible, the above link is pointing to 3powersparks.com but will soon be directed towards the offical website; which it looks like it will be 2/22/2008 before this is ready.

Cool! yeah… So we had our first offical meeting last Friday to choose the website name… In Visual Form, good name! Thanks goes to David Irick for coming up with this, along with everyone helping with the brain storming session.

In Visual Form is an Adobe user group which is focused on data visualization which is primarily made possible using Adobe technology. There are a few open source solutions that will be discussed as well, and in the case where it makes sense other software and hardwared related to the user group’s primary interest in data visualization will be open to discussion as well.

Testing SWF Embed And Streaming Video

So, we should have an embedded swf below from the red5 demo with one of our fly-thru animations. click on the player then the button to start it. then let it go; I need to fix the interaction so it doesn’t fail. Actually, might be better to try and list the animations for selection.

Stretching the learning curve

Wow! I just spent 12 hours trying to figure out why Modestmaps was not refreshing when the center of the map was changed programmatically.
I found the solution and it had something to do with a missing function in the flex.maps script.
See http://www.netthreads.co.uk/
How’s that for my April fools?
